Chapter 12

Tavin

Kayla’s riding shotgun in the truck and jiggling her leg against mine, her nervous tick increasing in speed the closer we get to the Timber Cove compound. She’s restless, but I doubt if it’s from the highway curves or the steady speed I’m driving. I can only hope that my actions, bringing her there, pay off, and possibly piss off her hunter. Because if he wants her, he’s gonna have to come through not only me, but my whole damn pack. “I completely understand your resistance to being regulated to the compound. And I’m sorry about Pepper. But she’s not your problem. She’s mine. As is this snake-shifter or leader. And anyone else who stands in the way of our happiness.”

“I appreciate what you’re offering, but nothing every goes smoothly for me.” Kayla squeezes my thigh, denting the denim with her nails. “I’ve never belonged to a pack. I’ve fantasized about it from a safe distance. But actually living inside a compound? This is too in my face. I think we should turn around. We’ll be safer at your house. With the dogs.”

I catch the fear in her gaze and understand it. “If you weren’t being hunted, I’d agree. Before I met you, I liked my privacy. It’s why I live there. No one around to argue with except my sister, and she mostly stays away these days, traveling back and forth to Deadwood, SD.”

“For her boyfriend.”

I nod, unwilling to go there. “Which has nothing to do with our situation. Maxon and Naomi are great people. They have a cabin in the back of their property we can stay in. Apparently, it was the Salvador’s home as kids, and they were born in that shack. Naomi even had her oldest daughter there, and Maxon helped with the delivery. Since, it’s been completely remodeled. Those two are really hands-on when it comes to family and raising their young. Their patience is the only reason I agreed to bringing you there. Naomi is familiar with abuse, and I think the two of you will warm up to each other.”

“It seems like you really respect them.”

I shy away for a moment, coming to terms with our past as I pull into the compound’s main road. “We had a rough start. I don’t understand how Maxon saw my worth, but he did. Now I do. The couple are leaders of the pack for a reason. Maxon is my friend and boss.”

“At the motorcycle shop.”

I glance her way. She’s familiar with my job, my routine. It’s not a far jump to wonder who else, if anyone, knows me like she does. “Which reminds me, I do have a shift this afternoon until six.”

“You’re leaving me here?”

“Not for a bit. I need to talk to Maxon and come up with a plan. We’ll try and get a couple of the other pack members to work the register. As well as erect an order that everyone travels in pairs until we get a handle on these attacks.
